Love Locked in Melbourne…

Our Escapades - Love lock Southgate footbridge melbourne

Feeling loved or want to show or express your love (romantic usually) for someone? Once upon a time, people could attach a padlock and throw away the key into the Yarra River, apparently sealing their love forever (now you have to do it the hard way). Not sure how many now belong to evergreen sweethearts but they are a fixture of this bridge. Thousands of padlocks on the Southgate Bridge symbolize love. It’s not unique to Melbourne (it has been around here for about 10 years now), there are several locations around the globe with such love locks.

As of May 2015, council authorities in Melbourne, Australia, began removing love locks from Southgate footbridge due to safety concerns. Around 22,000 love locks were reported to have been fixed to the railings, causing cables to sag. Sigh! Sad. Maybe they should build a bridge or something just so we can padlock and throw they keys away keeping the padlock industry to thrive…
