Monteverde, means Green Mountain and this little town in Costa Rica truly stands up to its name. Popular for its beautiful cloud forests and greenery, this town also has one of the world’s weirdest restaurants, Tree House Restaurante & Cafe. In this town, you will most likely run into the same people you saw the previous day. It reminded me of my birth place, Coimbatore where I almost always run into somebody that I know or somebody that knows me.
With a handful of family-run restaurants and a souvenir shops, it is a really nice and safe place to hang out in the evening.
Tree House Restaurante & Cafe is lively with lights and this unique restaurant that is built around a huge tree. The food is okay at best, but it certainly offers one of a kind experience, or rather, a unique ambiance.
The small family-run restaurants are the way to go for authentic Costa Rican food. They are certainly not fancy, but you’ll end up with a gratifying meal. We went to Soda Bonanza a few times and to Soda La Amistad. The portions are so big that even if you are burning with hunger, you can still split a meal with another person. The banana milkshake especially is way too delicious. In spite of the fact that the owner knew little English, he was lively, trying his best to talk and liven things up.
We hopped into a souvenir shop. It was a huge shop with plenty of options for souvenirs. Though a bit on the pricey side, you are bound to find trinkets to take home. They do carry huge (both in size and price) works of art for sale, if you are into that kind of stuff.
We even did grocery shopping to buy tres leches and snacks. When you are in Monteverde, make some time to stroll around the little town to relax and have some good local food.
